Bradford

That afternoon, we journeyed to Bradford. Once the wool capital of the world, the city has evolved into a cosmopolitan center shaped by diverse migrant communities from South Asia, Germany, and Eastern Europe. Grown around the textile industry, its monumental Victorian mills have today been transformed into art galleries, museums, and high-tech commercial hubs.

I spent the entire afternoon exploring the city’s renowned National Museum of Photography, Film and Television. Across six floors, the museum mounts interactive multimedia exhibitions tracing the evolution of photography, television, and cinema. Alongside these are the Kodak Museum devoted to popular photography, an IMAX cinema, and specialized galleries dedicated to British television. To add to the occasion, the third Bradford Film Festival was underway from the 7th to the 22nd of the month. Amidst an exceedingly informative and educational complex, an exhibition by the photographer Evergon and an IMAX screening arrested my attention.

Evergon (born 1946), a Canadian-born artist, received his Master of Fine Arts in photography in 1969, having also trained in sculpture, painting, and printmaking. Beginning his career in the 1970s, he initially worked as a copy artist. By the early 1980s, he began experimenting with the Polaroid SX-70. An exhibition in 1981 brought him to the attention of the Polaroid Corporation, which granted him access to their massive 20×24 and 40×80 inch large-format museum cameras in Massachusetts. This apparatus established him before the world as a formidable, distinctive visual artist.

Initially, he utilized this monumental camera to recreate classical masterpieces of Western painting—in essence, transmuting photography into painting. This was a process that signaled a radical conceptual shift in both mediums.

From the Renaissance down to the emergence of Impressionism, painting essentially performed the labor that photography was later to inherit: rendering the external visual world with fidelity, transposing geometric and mathematical perspectives of outer reality onto canvas. Yet with the invention of photography, the very ontology of painting was transformed. No matter how consummate his technical virtuosity, a painter could never match the mechanical precision and objective clarity of the camera. Consequently, the purpose of painting altered course: turning away from depicting the external landscape, it began charting the interior universe of the soul. If an artist paints a blossom or a fruit today, it cannot remain a mere botanical record; it must reveal itself as a flower of contemplative meditation, the fruit of the artist’s inner tapas!

Yet, nearly a century later, the contemporary photographer realized that before the mechanical eye of his lens, the inner eye of contemplation had grown obscured. Photography, which had progressed technologically with the sole imperative of capturing the surface textures of the visible world, now turned inward, seeking to mirror the photographer’s own subjective quest for truth.

In presenting the photographer as a modern painter working in silver bromide, Evergon’s pioneering endeavors hold singular importance. To mark his selection as the 1996 Bradford Fellow in Photography, the museum mounted a retrospective titled Evergon 1987–1997. Among the hundred images on display, The Ramboys: A Bookless Novel stood out as a monumental achievement. Printed in large 65×55 inch formats, these works represent a daring synthesis of mythological allegory and advanced photographic technology. Drawing inspiration from classical Greek drama and mythology on the one hand, and articulating contemporary gay identity on the other, the photographs stage two young male figures in homoerotic mythological tableaux. At the center strides the figure of the Ramboy. Here, the ram stands as an archaic emblem of untamed, visceral sexual energy. Across these compositions, various youths appear in the embrace of this protagonist who seeks to declare his vital life-force through the physical body and taste the uninhibited joys of existence.

Walking through the gallery of Evergon’s works, a single preoccupation took hold of my mind: the persistent dissatisfaction of Western man with art and its technical instruments. Perceiving his inner consciousness to be perpetually vaster than the expressive capacities of his art, he suffers the agony that his aesthetic apparatus cannot fully articulate his interior reality. Out of that restless anguish, new art forms and new instruments are continuously born.

I observed that this dissatisfaction operates with relentless velocity in Western life. In the Eastern world, dissatisfaction certainly exists, but it seldom moves with such hurried urgency—least of all regarding the tools of expression. Upon the sole foundation of the simple Anuṣṭubh meter, the colossal edifice of classical Sanskrit literature was erected; across a millennium, the Telugu Kanda verse remained fundamentally unchanged. For the Eastern artist, the primary impulse is to give voice to the serene contentment (tṛpti) he has realized in life. For the Western artist, the primary imperative is to articulate the existential discontent (asantṛpti) he wrestles with in existence.

The IMAX cinema represents a parallel manifestation. It is an innovation born out of an aesthetic frustration with conventional cinematic apparatus. For decades, the modest 35mm screen has left audiences yearning for more. No matter how faithfully cinema mirrors real life, our conscious awareness that we are merely observing a film remains stubbornly intact. One seeks to dissolve that distance. The complete, immersive engagement one experiences while witnessing reality must somehow become possible within the cinematic experience itself. The pursuit of that total immersion has driven continuous technological experimentation: the 70mm widescreen, 3-D projections, and stereophonic sound. The IMAX screen represents the latest summit of that quest.

Upon Britain’s largest silver screen, running film ten times larger than standard 35mm stock fed horizontally through a projector the size of a small car, the visual universe unfolds before our eyes with overwhelming, immersive proportions. Such an extraordinary projection could be experienced nowhere else in Britain at the time save Bradford.

That afternoon, they screened a forty-minute documentary titled Blue Planet. Built around the central theme of global ecological preservation and sponsored by the Lockheed Corporation, the film was composed of footage captured by astronauts from orbit and deep space, illustrating the depletion of the earth’s natural resources alongside the unchecked spread of urbanization and industrial pollution. To behold an ocean tempest raging across the Pacific, a volcanic eruption in Japan, an earthquake tearing through California, and the burning of rainforests in Africa across the towering canvas of the IMAX screen was a stunning experience. To film the upper atmosphere convulsed by lightning storms during a deluge is one feat; the visceral impact that sheer scale exerts upon human sensory perception and outward consciousness on such a screen is quite another.

The evening journey from Bradford back to Manchester was filled with quiet wonder. On either side stretched valleys of green pastures, flocks of grazing sheep, and scattered English hamlets, while streetlamps began to glitter along the highway beneath a twilight slowly dissolving into deep indigo. An indefinable tranquillity settled over my entire mind.

I may never traverse that road again in this lifetime. This was perhaps my first and final passage along that route. Yet the serene stillness of that journey will accompany me all my days. That sweeping moorland providing the brooding backdrop to Emily Brontë’s tragic romance in Wuthering Heights, those austere horizons, those ancient stone dykes, the potted blooms on the sills, the lace curtains, and that elder warming his hands beside the hearth—they will return to memory again and again.

Remembering that journey now, it feels as though on some deep, untroubled night of sleep in Hyderabad, I mounted a winged steed, wandered in a dream across those rolling green pastures for a whole day, and then, by some mysterious summons, woke back into my room and my familiar daily routine.

  1. Wherever you travel, it is beyond just sightseeing. You really immerse yourself in that place, exploring its past and present, its people, culture, art, history and music, without overlooking its less pleasant realities. Such a complete experience!

Thank you for this wonderful series on your travels through England, sir.
