An English Sojourn

A Modern Alexandria

Today, Manchester pulses with far greater vitality as a university city than as an industrial metropolis. Men and women arriving from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Far East have transformed the university into a veritable global village.

During my first week, the International Students’ Union organized an International Week. Each day brought exhibitions, debates, and symposiums exploring the cultures, attire, culinary heritage, literature, music, dances, and beliefs of diverse nations. Throughout the week, they mounted an exhibition examining the condition of women across different continents. With educated young men and women from diverse lands traversing its streets in joyful camaraderie, Manchester appeared like a modern Alexandria.

What do these young people seek? They are voicing a collective protest against every traditional and modern power that has governed the world hitherto. They challenge the historical hegemony exercised by the West over the globe, by the white race over others, and by men over women. They lay bare the thousand grasping faces of the global market—that latest incarnation of capitalist society. In that sense, the university campus has transformed into a living center of activism: a workshop of the mind forging radical ideas destined to shape the world of tomorrow.

Faith in Search of Understanding

It surprised me to discover that St Peter’s Chaplaincy, situated right on the university campus, was playing an active role in this changing epoch. In comprehending shifting world currents and scrutinizing them in the light of the Gospel, I noticed that the Church here was far ahead of the political parties in our own country.

A lecture series organized jointly by the Anglican, Methodist, United Reformed, Roman Catholic, and Orthodox traditions confronted the pressing predicaments of contemporary existence with remarkable courage. It proclaimed itself a quest for a credible, authentic form of Christian faith. The Church defined its objective not as understanding in search of faith, but as faith in search of understanding—fides quaerens intellectum.

According to this renewed Church, the crucifiers of the modern world fall into three broad classes. The first comprises those who abuse authority. The second consists of those intoxicated by sheer power. The third encompasses those who remain indifferent in the presence of love.

The Church observed that when individuals and institutions entrusted with serving the public turn to internal squabbling, that too constitutes an abuse of power. It traced the arrogance of the strong in the economic domination exercised by affluent nations over impoverished economies; and it located the cold indifference toward love in the callous abandonment of the destitute to their helpless misery.

The Church’s reflections persuasively demonstrate that the xenophobia being fostered by states across the world today, especially within Europe, is the inevitable outcome of these three failings. It argued that the lives of individuals and nations are tossed by seismic upheavals beyond their control; that the gravest peril in these convulsions is premature death—whether brought on by war, pestilence, or destitution; and that every untimely death is nothing less than another crucifixion of humanity.

This fresh voice in the Church’s language, its renewed perspective, and its profound humanism moved me deeply. In our own country, none of our contemporary religious traditions have managed to renew their idiom with such modern relevance.

Even its response to Information Technology was deeply considered. The Church cautioned that human beings are being reduced to computer codes and students to mere registration numbers, issuing a clear call that such depersonalization must be resisted from the very outset.

Frontline

I visited Frontline, the radical bookshop located on Newton Street in Piccadilly Centre, twice. On its shelves were works on leftist politics, feminist inquiries, Black literature, lesbian and gay studies, ecology, alternative medicine, meditation, and yoga, alongside posters, audio cassettes, and videotapes. This is literature belonging to the life and world of tomorrow: writing and music that give voice to the postmodern currents advanced by peoples, women, lesbians, and homosexuals whom conventional modern traditions have continually marginalized. It struck me that the true guideposts for a new world are to be found here, rather than in corporate management courses or programming languages.

The Manchester Museum

Situated right upon the university campus, the Manchester Museum is an institution well worth visiting. Britain’s foremost scientific triumphs have largely been achieved within the natural sciences, and the University of Manchester occupies a distinguished place in the history of science. Both John Dalton, who asserted that the atom was indivisible, and Ernest Rutherford, who split the atom, made Manchester their laboratory.

Britain may no longer rival the rapid advances of computer technology surging out of the United States and East Asia. Yet the British intellect remains formidable in foundational modern sciences such as biology, physics, and chemistry. It was only recently that Scottish scientists astonished the world by cloning a sheep. It came as no surprise, then, that natural history should dominate the galleries of the Manchester Museum.

Yet what held my attention most deeply was the museum’s Egyptology collection. In 1908, Dr. Margaret Murray, the university’s eminent Egyptologist, unwrapped two four-thousand-year-old mummies from their sarcophagi, bringing entirely new facets of ancient Egyptian history to light. Those coffins and burial ornaments were on display.

Beyond these, the galleries exhibited artifacts, implements, and carvings collected from African, Native American, and Pacific indigenous peoples. On an upper floor lay the Mediterranean collections, displaying Greek and Roman archaeological remains alongside ancient artifacts tracing the evolutionary history of written scripts.
