An English Sojourn: Notes from Manchester

A Moment of Overwhelming Awe

The moment my feet touched English soil, just stirring awake from misty nights of arctic winds, an intense surge of emotion took hold of me. The mere realization that I had entered England left me in a state of quiet bewilderment.

England! The playhouse of Shakespeare; the England of Shelley and Keats; the England of Wordsworth and Coleridge; of Dickens and De Quincey; of Shaw and Lawrence; of Mill and Ruskin; of Newton and Darwin; the England of Oxford and Cambridge; of Adam Smith and Bentham; of Chaplin and Hitchcock; of Marx and Engels; the England of Gandhi and Nehru; the England that ruled my country; the England my people hated; the England that awakened us. ..

A cascade of contrary thoughts swept through me in waves—fierce and tender, lucid and inchoate. I remembered our high school teacher Venkataratnam sir, who had taught us European and English history during my high school days. The Renaissance, the Magna Carta, Luther, Cromwell, Calvin, the Glorious Revolution, the bicameral parliament, the Industrial Revolution, the colonial exploits of the East India Company, national liberation movements, two World Wars, and the long arc of emancipatory struggles that surged across the Southern Hemisphere from Dadabhai Naoroji to Nelson Mandela—the realization that I stood at a singular crossroads where history and the present moment dissolved into each other filled me with wonder.

It struck me that every facet I was to uncover about England in the coming days, every truth I was to learn, would also become a way of understanding my own land—a renewed, searching re-examination of our past and our present.

A Learning Experience

The government sponsored me for a four-week orientation on Rural Poverty Alleviation: Project Management and Supervision, conducted by the Institute for Development Policy and Management at the University of Manchester. Included within this four-week training was a two-week field study of the Malaysian economy. Setting aside the ten days spent in Malaysia, our time in Manchester amounted to barely a fortnight. Within this brief window, I had to seek out every possible vantage point to observe English life at close quarters.

I treated these varied occasions as windows into different dimensions of human existence. Not merely through public spaces—hamlets, great cities, parks, museums, galleries, theatres, libraries, stadiums, and restaurants—nor solely through cultural mediums like literature, art, news broadcasts, lectures, debates, and symposiums, but through people: professors, scholars, critics, friends, students, strangers, waiters, drivers, shop assistants, and mendicants. From each person, each encounter, each gathering, I searched for a grain of truth or a flash of joy.

Until this unfamiliar, foreign culture could be held close to the heart, I kept interrogating it. I turned it over again and again, testing it against the sensibilities shaped across decades of my own lived experience. Some of these reflections, both central and peripheral, I shall endeavor to set down here. I believe this journey will stand as yet another testament to what I have always held true: that writing itself is a learning experience.
