In the Lap of Papikondalu

Parnasala

Before the morning mist had lifted in the pre-dawn chill, we walked along the banks of the Godavari. The riverbank shimmered in vibrant colors with pilgrims taking their holy Karthika baths. Invigorated by a dip in the river, we entered the temple. Standing before the sanctum—radiant with jewel-encrusted archways, glittering mirror festoons, fragrant canopies of fresh blossoms, and the swirling perfume of agarbatti and ceremonial fans—my heart bowed in deep devotion.

The priests offered the harati and showed us the Lord, the Mother seated gracefully upon His left lap, and the procession deities (utsava murtis). Outside in the courtyard, bakula (pogada) trees were in full bloom.

“Everyone feels they know something about Bhadrachalam and Ramadasu,” Master remarked. “Yet so many profound truths remain hidden from common knowledge. Did you know that when Rama and Lakshmana repaid the revenue treasury on behalf of Ramadasu, Tanisha offered all that gold back to Ramadasu? And how many know that Ramadasu refused it, saying it was divine wealth over which he had no claim, taking back merely two gold coins as sacred tokens!”

Master continued: “For the next two centuries, Bhadrachalam passed through the hands of various changing regimes, yet the patronage and maintenance of the temple continued uninterrupted under the Nizams of Golconda. In later years, however, the temple weathered great turbulence. For a time, the consecrated idols had to be moved and sheltered in hiding. During those trying days, two devotees rendered extraordinary service to the shrine: Thumu Narasimhadasu and Varada Ramadasu.”

“They shared a rare and sacred friendship,” he said. “Narasimhadasu collected and compiled Ramadasu’s kirtanas and prison songs. During his travels across the South, he met Saint Tyagaraja and introduced Ramadasu’s compositions to him—a musical communion evidenced in several of Tyagaraja’s own songs. When Varada Ramadasu passed away, Narasimhadasu followed his beloved friend into the beyond, giving up his own life. In recognition of that supreme sacrifice, the Nizam’s government even granted a permanent hereditary stipend to his family.”

Master turned to me and added: “Suviditha! Bhadrachalam and this temple do not belong to any single religion or community. They stand as enduring symbols of harmony between Hindu and Muslim rulers, and between tribal ethos and mainstream civilization. War is born from intolerance—the inability to endure the presence of the person beside you. A humanity transcending all religions blossoms only from the grace of acceptance—the capacity to embrace the other.”

From Bhadrachalam, Uttam and Vasanth drove us to Parnasala, a journey of half an hour. There, the Godavari flowed in broad, majestic fullness. The site housed a Rama temple and a display of dioramas depicting the abduction of Sita.

“Did Rama and Sita truly live here?” Vasanth asked.

Master smiled with gentle warmth. “It is difficult for us to reconstruct Valmiki’s exact geography today. But every region in this country finds its own deep spiritual fulfillment in claiming the story of Rama as its very own.”

“Very true,” Uttam joined in. “They say Rama chased the golden deer from here and finally struck it down with his arrow near Warangal.”

I held little curiosity for the historical Rama, and knew little of the metaphysical Rama. But for the Rama celebrated and sung by Ramadasu, Tyagayya, Kabir, Tulasidas, Gandhiji, and Viswanatha, I held boundless reverence. What a wondrous manifestation it must be to have awakened such profound ecstasy in them all!

When Kabir on the banks of the Ganga and Tyagayya on the banks of the Kaveri could feel that Rama belonged intimately to them, how could I, standing here on the banks of the Godavari, ever feel that Rama is not mine?

A Living Light

“Lest you think I have shown you only ancient ways of living, modern life thrives here too,” Master said. “The Bhadrachalam Paper Mill, the Kothagudem Thermal Power Station, the Heavy Water Plant in Manuguru, the opencast collieries at Yellandu—which of these would you like to see?”

When I requested something close by, he took us to the Bhadrachalam Paperboards Mill. Stepping inside, it hardly felt like entering a factory precinct. The verdant surroundings, the lawns, and the thriving eucalyptus clonal plantations made it appear more like a meditation hall nestled within a garden.

When I shared this impression with the mill’s General Manager, Sri Tulasi, he pointed to five principles displayed on the wall—the Japanese 5S tenets of workplace management. It was evident that not only he, but even the worker at the grass roots of the plant, believed in and lived by that discipline.

Sri Tulasi shared many details about the mill, but among all his observations, one remark resonated deeply with me: “We can buy machinery, we can even buy technology. But we cannot buy workplace culture and management. That is an ethos.”

The final halt of our journey was the Horticulture Training and Multiplication Centre run by the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) at Garimellapadu near Kothagudem. It serves as both a training ground and a nursery guiding tribal farmers away from shifting cultivation (podu) toward horticulture. Sri Bhaskar, the nursery officer, mentioned that their centre had produced one hundred thousand grafted cashew saplings that year alone.

Tomorrow or the day after, I might fly back to America. The roar of bombs over Kandahar may quiet down. Headlines about the war might linger in the newspapers for a while longer. But those who bear genuine concern for the future of humanity do not measure life by these ephemeral disruptions. Steadfast in constructive action, they quietly carry on with their chosen work in ways that bring fulfillment to the soul.

Back in Darlapalli, I had asked the indigenous singer, Andela Kannapu Reddy: “Do you find greater joy in singing along with everyone, or in singing all by yourself?”

He replied: “Singing together with our people is a festival. But simply because others are not around, I will never stop singing. Whenever my heart feels joy, I just keep on singing.”

In the words of that primal singer, I found the answer to what must be done if the world is to become free of war. Human endeavor shines as a living light—in Ramadasu’s selfless devotion, in Narasimhadasu’s supreme sacrifice, in the cooperative movement at Perantalapalli, in Kadala Anasuya tending her cashew orchard, and in the meticulous discipline maintained at the paper mill. In such selfless, productive labor, every diverse current of life cannot help but merge into a harmonious confluence.

Guarding that sacred evolution, the Papikonda hills will stand tall for all eternity.
