A New Europe

On my final day, I visited the Whitworth Art Gallery to view Flexible 2, a pan-European contemporary art exhibition. A united Europe is emerging today not merely as a political ideal, but as an aesthetic aspiration. Conscious attempts have begun to explore artistic unity and articulate a new European consciousness. As part of this quest, the exhibition assembled works crafted through innovative media and non-traditional materials. Forty-nine artists representing seventeen nations utilized lightweight, unconventional substances—silicone, wire mesh, vulcanized rubber, galvanized steel, plastic filaments, reclaimed timber, and desiccated foliage—to shape experimental forms.

As in the political sphere, the conceptual clarity of this new art has yet to fully consolidate. In many instances, the artist’s vision remains inchoate, opaque, and enigmatic; one senses that the creator is not entirely satisfied with his own creation.

Yet within this new Europe, works emerging from smaller nations and historic borderlands—Hungary, Poland, the Netherlands, and Ukraine—possessed far greater directness and aesthetic vitality than the artistic expressions of dominant Western nations like Germany or Britain. Hitherto, European culture was dictated by France, Italy, Germany, England, and Spain; they represented the cultural hegemony of the modern era. Today, the impact of the postmodern turn sounds unmistakably through the fresh voices of these long-marginalized realms.

Artists from Scandinavian countries like Norway and Sweden stand as the vanguard of this new Europe, with British and German artists following in their wake. The themes selected by artists from these smaller nations bear an unmistakable postmodern imprint: they seek to foreground the dispossessed, women, and marginalized sensibilities. Their creative vision achieves its most potent expressive force when confronting the historic subjugation of women. Notable among these were Mysterious Rosegarden (1995) from Finland, Dialogue (1994) from Hungary, Textile Bodies (1995) from Slovenia, and Kimono (1994) from Denmark.

Above all, Body Shields (1994), an installation by an Austrian artist, stood out as a supreme achievement. Using industrial iron mesh coated in stark white pigment, the sculptor fashioned a sequence of hollow women’s torsos. Looking upon those rigid iron cuirasses, one is immediately gripped by dark sensations surrounding the physical assaults visited upon the female body; yet through that very disquiet, the sculpture radiates an unyielding aura of sanctuary and self-defense. Capable of evoking terror and protective fortitude in the same breath, the artist who conceived this sculptural form mirrors the soul of the new Europe with uncompromising fidelity.

The Post-Heroic Age

Throughout my hours in the art gallery, a gentle spring rain fell outside. Through the expansive glass facades, the trees, weeping boughs, and green lawns of Whitworth Park glistened beneath the falling drops. From branches that had remained huddled beneath frost for months, bright, tender shoots were lifting their heads into the light. Enchanted by that vista, I walked up to the glass panes and stood there motionless for a long while.

My sojourn in England had run its course; tomorrow brought the journey home. What had I learned of the English human being through this brief companionship? On countless occasions, I bowed before his innate generosity and unforced refinement. On just as many occasions, I extended my silent solidarity to his private sorrows and social anxieties.

This was no longer the arrogant Englishman who once looked down upon other races and held them in subjugation. In that quiet moment, I remembered a young Englishman who had walked a few paces beside me one evening in Manchester. He mentioned how deeply he loved the film Gandhi.

“If only all men could become Gandhis,” he remarked wistfully, “how wonderful this world would be.”

Today’s Englishman is a human being inhabiting the aftermath of monumental historical epochs. Belonging to this Post-Heroic Age, his foremost priority is simply to live with quiet dignity as a human being. Today, neither a warrior like Oliver Cromwell nor a champion of hero-worship like Thomas Carlyle serves as his ideal. Keeping the streets of Manchester clean matters far more to him than grand imperial treaties signed at Versailles.

He stands today as one among many—an equal walking alongside fellow human beings across the emergent nations and races of the earth. In this very humility resides the true pre-eminence of his culture.

Before the awakening of spring, he can no longer sing in the grand manner of Milton, Keats, or Wordsworth. He is striving to liberate himself from the subterranean delusions of superiority that once lurked beneath that ecstatic rhetoric. Furthermore, he knows he cannot speak in the heroic register of his ancestral poets; to do so amidst the altered realities of our world would be hollow posturing.

Yet in the joy awakened by the onset of spring, and in the sheer impossibility of suppressing that delight, his dilemma remains fundamentally identical to the tension Milton and Wordsworth wrestled with in their own times. The predicament of the English poet is, in truth, the predicament of the English human being.

How the English poet of this postmodern era cannot help welcoming spring, and yet how profoundly he differs from Milton and Wordsworth, is captured with understated elegance in Robert Wallace’s poem In a Spring Still Not Written Off (1965):

This morning
with a class of girls outdoors, I saw
how frail poems are
in a world burning up with flowers,
in which, overhead,
the great elms
—green, and tall—
stood carrying leaves in their arms.

The girls listened equally
to my drone, and to the bees’
ricocheting
among them for the blossom on the bone,
or gazed off at a distant mower’s
astronomies of green
and clover, flashing,
threshing in the new, untarnished sunlight.

And all the while, dwindling,
tinier, the voices—Yeats, Marvell, Donne—
sank drowning
in a spring still not written of,
as only the sky
clear above the brick bell tower
—blue, and white—
was shifting toward the hour.

Calm, indifferent, cross-legged
or on elbows half-lying in the grass—
how should the great dead
tell them of dying?
They will come to time for poems at last,
when they have found they are no more
the beautiful and young
all poems are for.
