Letters from Delhi
1
…My heart is so full of wonder at this miraculous play of divine grace that I felt an immediate urge to share it with you without losing a moment.
Why must God perform miracles? I believe a miracle is nothing other than God’s most tender gesture of love. Frail, ordinary things—a chance meeting, a casual greeting, the mundane occupations of everyday life—turn into revelations the moment God chooses to speak through them. It is like offering the loveliest blossom of your daily worship to the Divine; it is like an embrace, an unadorned kiss, a quiet word of praise, or a morning telephone call from someone dear to your heart.
Yet the true beauty of a miracle lies in how profoundly it bears witness to grace showering upon you. When a miracle occurs, it carries you into the deepest chambers of your own heart. You celebrate the quiet joy of being chosen, the happiness of knowing you are numbered among the few who have tasted His compassion.

I posted yesterday’s letter this morning. I longed to call you as well, but from where could I even place a call? We spent the entire day sightseeing. In the morning we visited the Qutub Minar, and climbed an adjoining rise to see a Jaina temple. The afternoon took us to the National Science Centre. Afterward, the organizers escorted our tribal guests to the aerodrome, and by dusk, they brought us to the Lakshmi Narayan Temple just as the evening arati was being offered.
This duty entrusted to me came as no surprise. There is undeniably something noble in it; besides, I am performing an official state courtesy. It is certainly a far better occupation than wearing out the hours in an office. Yet it is this very machinery of state that sets me thinking. I find myself turning over endless questions about this country, its history, its civilization, and its future. Has there ever been anything genuinely sublime in the long chronicles of this land? Perhaps under Ashoka, under Harsha, or through the golden age of the Guptas, conditions were fundamentally no different: the same quiet oppression, the same self-deception, the very same indifference toward one’s fellow beings.
What Delhi offers its people is, in truth, dispiriting. There is little here that truly elevates the spirit. Wherever grandeur displays itself—be it expansive public parks, the memorial grounds of statesmen, temples, or museums—every spectacle merely summons to my mind the hundreds of thousands left unsheltered, the millions crowded into squalid slums, the throngs packed into city buses, and the countless families consigned to the suffocating upper reaches of high-rise tenements.
As a student, the words nation and national integration never failed to stir me. But does a nation truly take shape through seminars, conferences, and guided excursions such as these? This tour provides everything—food, shelter, security, responsibility, diversion, and sightseeing. Yet where is the true animating spark? Somehow, I feel as though I am losing myself.
On a personal level, I have nothing to complain of. The delegates gathered here seem to be enjoying themselves thoroughly. Today I spoke with a young Santhali woman from Bihar. I also met two Bhil delegates from the Aravalli ranges of Rajasthan, and an Oraon from the forests of Sundargarh in Orissa. All of them spoke of how much joy this journey has brought them.
I went through the National Science Centre. While it represents a commendable effort, it failed to truly move me. A few exhibits were undeniably well conceived—particularly the working model of a coal mine. An entire gallery was filled with interactive toys and demonstrations illustrating fundamental laws of physics, making that floor quite engaging. Walking through those halls, my thoughts surged around the possibilities of science. Yet I cannot help feeling that something deeper than science runs through the Indian bloodstream. Science has never filled me with awe; it is human beings who awaken my wonder.
Back in high school, my classmates were absorbed in scientific concepts. Whenever we attended a science fair, they were intent on deciphering the underlying principle behind each exhibit. I, on the other hand, was drawn to the vivid colors of the displays, the lively clamor, and the human drama unfolding around them. India, I believe, needs above all to understand its own people—though I do not deny that the nation needs science too. Even so, my conviction remains: what this country needs most are people who think deeply about the human beings around them. In Delhi, such souls seem few and far between—so scarce as to be almost unreckonable.
A city gains its morning light and its true awakening only from people of the soil; only such a city could I ever call the true capital of a nation. Delhi is a city of public personalities, not of the people.
I will close here. The whole city is dressing itself for tomorrow’s celebrations. By tomorrow night, I shall perhaps have much to share with you.

This morning was, in truth, a magnificent experience. The Republic Day parade was a visual feast—a spectacle every citizen ought to behold at least once in a lifetime. I do not mean that missing it leaves one’s life incomplete; rather, to look upon it is to welcome a fresh joy into one’s existence. The credit for such a resplendent display belongs entirely to those who founded this tradition. It is the past, an inheritance, a tradition transforming into the future before our very eyes—a shared weaving of the old and the new. It is a testament, a vision, a living experience of unity within diversity. It offers a broad outline of what India was, what it remains, and what it strives to become: an irresistible expression of our self-confidence, our inner strength, our vitality, and the reality of our collective existence.
In its clockwork precision and solemn pageantry, the entire ceremonial display was undoubtedly a celebration of the State. Yet, was it a festival of the people? Somehow, I find myself pausing at the sharp line that separates the public from the people. The State in India is neither elementary like its European counterparts, nor rigid like a communist apparatus. The frontier between the people and the State here is so delicate that one cannot arrive at hasty verdicts.
It was eight in the morning, with the biting winter chill still stinging the air. Yet crowds had already begun to pack the avenues to witness the parade. Men and women, the aged and the young, children in their parents’ arms—everyone had stepped forth with eager anticipation. Security was formidable. VIPs and their entourages swarmed the enclosures, claiming more than half the available space. Even so, ordinary citizens yearned with equal fervor to claim their share in the moment.
Something genuinely moving stirred through the whole scene. Beyond raw power, martial muscle, the scepter of authority, wealth, and pomp, something true, noble, lovely, and fine shone through. In that moment, the entire epic of our freedom struggle rushed back to me—the boundless sacrifices, the tears, the gallows, the prison cells. The trials, the protests, everything I had ever read or heard of that great upheaval returned to my thoughts. It was that epic struggle that forged an ancient land into a modern nation.
Has that struggle reached its close? On the open battlefield, the conflict may be over. But within the encampment of the soul, the tumult has not ceased. The churning within the heart, the quiet conflict within our minds and spirits, is far from done; in truth, it has only just begun.
Watching the infantry march past with flawless discipline, I wondered: what must these soldiers think of their political executive, of rulers who have squandered their moral credibility? And what must they think of their civil bureaucracy, which has followed the political class so far down the path of corruption and degradation? Yet in the discipline of those marching ranks, not a single foot faltered. I could not help admiring them; I found myself wishing to be like them. Let whatever darkness encircle you, your feet must never swerve from your svadharma.
Now I have found the exact word: the entire pageant of the Republic felt like an embodiment of the nation’s svadharma.
In the afternoon, I rested briefly. Whenever a quiet hour presented itself, I returned to reading The Guru Tradition. It is like setting sail on a great voyage upon a ship of wisdom. The Paramacharya’s luminous clarity concerning tradition, country, history, individuals, faiths, and spiritual institutions sheds radiant light on every page. His clarity of mind is so pristine that his inner consciousness seems untouched by the slightest blemish.
He remarks in one place that masters anchored in inner spiritual strength are far superior to those sustained merely by institutional power. He adds, without hesitation, that he writes these words despite being the head of an ancient monastic seat himself. If only such crystalline clarity were granted to a few more souls! If only such lucid vision were possible for the thinkers of our modern systems!

This is the hour to speak with you. There is an immense, quietly potent power in performing certain tasks each day at their appointed hour, without fail. It deepens into a sacred rite, a prayer. The Vedas called it Ṛta—the unswerving rhythm of eternal cosmic order. Whatever disrupts that rhythm is anṛta, falsehood. Yet the Vedic seers knew that any such disruption is only passing; the eternal order never fails to reassert itself with irresistible force.
When you perform actions day after day with disciplined rhythm, life-energy stirs awake from the deepest ground of your being. That awakening illuminates you just as the dawn illumines the world. Sitting here now, writing these few lines to you feels like an act of worship. It is a prayer. Through its rhythm, its quiet descent of power, and its intrinsic clarity, it transforms into a consecrated act, cleansing my body, my breath, and every current of my mind.
To turn to you like this is to awaken the divine within me. It is to answer the divine within you, keeping vigil before the sacred presence of your being.
This morning, we attended the annual NCC Rally, also known as the Prime Minister’s Rally. Across the Army, Navy, and Air Force, NCC contingents from every corner of the country gather here to celebrate their year’s achievements. Because the venue lay at a considerable distance, we set out as early as seven. The weather remained uncooperative; the sun stayed hidden behind a dense pall of cloud until nearly eleven. A biting chill cut through the air, and thick fog, severely limiting visibility, forced the cancellation of several specialized maneuvers, including flypasts by circling helicopters. Even so, the entire rally unfolded with breathtaking energy—a magnificent showcase of youthful vigor, the irrepressible surge of young blood.
Yet almost immediately, a cascade of thoughts concerning our youth closed in upon me. I could not help reflecting on the youth of rural India, those crowded into urban slums, impoverished young men and women, waiters in roadside diners, and all those who remain utterly disenfranchised within our society. Measured against the polished, radiant youth I watched this morning, where do they stand?
An ocean divides them: in confidence, parental care, clarity of ambition, the nature of their dreams, and the social embrace extended to them. Society opens its doors readily to those who are favored with poise, charm, and vitality. But what of the millions left behind? What will ever fall to their share? By the time the formations marched off the field, a heavy melancholy had settled over me.
Vijji, why is it that beauty so often moves me to sorrow? It stirs a strange guilt within me—sometimes a flare of resentment, sometimes a silent urge for reckoning. It is only recently that I have learned to outgrow those impulses and preserve my inner peace. That peace does not come from compromise; nor is it wrought merely through intellect or an emotional resolve. I have come to realize that the power which grants me the discernment to look upon beauty and squalor at once—without allowing turmoil to shake my heart—is nothing other than divine grace.
Others might take this for callousness. But to me, it marks the ripening of inner sensitivity into mature poise.
After enduring terrible inner conflicts within my own soul, I have come to feel that the greatest gift I can offer this world is simply my presence. My being: unassuming, quiet, and ordinary. Through its very silence and unadorned simplicity, such an existence becomes a gentle, compassionate movement toward suffering fellow beings. I can sense that those around me receive something of this through me. A presence stripped of ego—that is the sanctuary every soul must strive to reach: the supreme realm, Paramapada. I pray to God to grant me the grace to abide in such a state of being within this very lifetime.
In the afternoon, we visited Rajghat. As a memento of that visit, I purchased a translation of the Ramcharitmanas. The moment I looked upon Rajghat, Shirdi returned to my memory. Among the countless tombs of emperors scattered across Delhi and its environs, Rajghat remains the most austere, the most noble, and the one that bears a living message.
You remember the flame that burns there without dying, don’t you? It continues to burn today. I speak not merely of that physical flame; an inner spiritual light—like the divine grace of Shirdi Sai Nath—radiates there for all time.
Let me pause here for now.

The journey to Agra and back consumed the entire day, leaving me utterly exhausted. I long to surrender to sleep this very instant. Yet before I slip away, the beauty of the Taj holds me fast, urging me to share a few thoughts with you.
I saw the Taj Mahal today in an extraordinary hour. The moment we arrived was one of the rarest, most auspicious hours to behold its grace. The sun shone with brilliant clarity in the sky, visitors were sparse, and cool winter winds drifted across the surrounding gardens. The serene delight one usually tastes in landscapes of sacred beauty touched me there as well.
Yet almost immediately, I found myself drawn into an inquiry on the nature of beauty. It struck me that among the three enduring ideals—Satyam, Shivam, Sundaram (the True, the Good, and the Beautiful)—ancient man contemplated primarily upon Truth (Satyam). That a thing appeared useful to some or attractive to others held little interest for him; it could never satisfy his relentless quest.
All he sought to uncover was whether a thing was true. What lay behind it all? What rested behind this outer husk, deep within the interior, behind this veil, behind this appearance, behind this grand illusion? That was his sole inquiry.
Medieval man, however, was consumed by Beauty (Sundaram). His quest was for luminous moments, for sublime aesthetic states, for beauty itself. Reading the Ramcharitmanas of Tulsidas, I realized that medieval poetry reached out to God primarily as Beauty incarnate, rather than as a formless, abstract Ultimate Truth. I share that view. Were it not so, an epic in marble like the Taj Mahal could never have been carved.
Yet modern man’s dilemma revolves around Utility and the Good (Shivam/Hitam). He cannot rest content with whether something is true or beautiful; it must serve a functional purpose, it must yield some tangible benefit to someone. Anything devoid of utility finds no welcome in the modern condition.
Why, then, do crowds still throng Agra in such numbers?
I read recently that during his state visit to India, the President of Communist China spent several hours at the Taj Mahal. It appears to me that beside its classical aesthetic splendor, the Taj offers some subtle, lingering good (hitam). In an age dominated by computers, what manner of ‘good’ can emanate from an ancient monument like the Taj?
Let me pause here to tell you: on our return journey, we stopped at a restaurant for lunch. After eating, I sat for a few minutes on the lawn out front. In those brief moments, a honeybee humming over a cluster of lilies arrested my entire attention. That lily and that honeybee took complete possession of my consciousness; their union filled my visible and invisible mind. In that entire play (līlā), there was truth, there was beauty, and there was poetry. It appeared as the convergence of what was, what is, and what will be—transcending every dividing line.
In that fleeting instant, I was no longer a modern man. I felt boundless, ancient, and ever-new. Beside that bee nestled within the blossom, even the Taj, gleaming in all its daytime majesty, paled into insignificance. That contrived human attempt to arrest eternity in stone suddenly seemed almost comical. What will become of that flower and that bee? Perhaps both will perish by the fall of dusk. Yet neither the blossom nor the bee strives to preserve its ecstatic union in marble. As mortal creatures, they are perishable; but as flower and bee, they are eternal.
Perhaps my thoughts have drifted into metaphysics. Yet through that tiny insect, a profound truth unveiled itself. The bee knows nothing of a Taj Mahal on this earth; neither does the Taj know anything of the bee. Yet I was there—a witness to both realities. The burden fell upon me to reconcile these two opposing testimonies of existence and beauty.
Between the two, my heart leaned toward the honeybee—if for nothing else, then for the humility of its scale.
The journey wore me out, particularly the drive back. There is much more I wish to say, but I must stop here…
