The Bliss of Shiva’s Presence

Alamkara Darshanam

The next morning brought another early morning harati. We set out for the temple at dawn to witness the Alankara Darshanam—the formal adornment of the deity. I wondered if Suchi would be able to wake up so early, but half an hour before the ritual, she was already ready—having taken a head-bath and dressed in a white handloom saree embroidered with delicate blue blossoms. She was no longer the American girl who had appeared yesterday in a maroon jerkin and blue jeans. She looked like a Shaiva yogini in the lineage of Akka Mahadevi and Hemareddy Mallamma, wandering in search of her Shiva. Suffering endures only until one discovers who they truly are; once that is crossed, what remains is pure serenity.

Suchi is truly a noble soul. She is as pure and unpretentious as a tummi (white leucas) flower placed at Shiva’s feet after an abhishekam and vibhuti adornment in the holy month of Kartika. That morning, she performed the abhishekam to the deity with deep devotion. Rosewater, the crystal-clear waters of the Krishna river, milk, flowers, Vedic hymns, and the five-syllable chant (Panchakshari)—chanted by pilgrims rushing forward crying “Water, water, sacred water!” and “Flowers, flowers, sacred flowers!”—filled the air. As we bathed the Shiva Lingam amidst the chanting of the Namakam praising “Namah Shivaya cha, Shivataraya cha”, a soothing, cool tranquility—the peace of Shiva—spread throughout the inner sky of the heart.

Next, we had the Alankara Darshanam in the shrine of the Mother Goddess. Amidst the adornment with fresh blossoms, the true ornamentation was the morning sunlight worshiping the Mother from head to toe like a garland of light. Beginning with “the topaz glow of the rising sun,” that embellishment culminated perfectly as a radiant red hibiscus tucked into the Goddess’s coiffure.

The temple garden, the ancient trees, and the sculpted stone art that had seemed hazy in the previous night’s moonlight were now vividly visible. Along with the shrines of Veerabhadraswamy, Ardhanareeswaraswamy, Uma Maheshwaraswamy, and Rajarajeswara, we sought the blessings of Vriddha Mallikarjuna. I told Suchi that this “Deaf Mallayya”—the earliest self-manifested (swayambhu) Lingam in Srisailam—is the guardian deity of the Chenchu tribals. Beside it, I also showed her the sacred Audumbara (cluster fig) tree planted by Sri Narasimha Saraswati Swamy.

An eager urge to see everything that remained pulled us forward like a whirlwind. We began with the Shivaji Spoorthi Kendram. Since early times, the Nallamala forests have offered sanctuary to countless exiled heroes.

Chhatrapati Shivaji also arrived in these Nallamala forests and visited this temple in 1677. Inspired by the tradition that the Mother Goddess bestowed a divine sword upon him in response to his intense penance, a study center is being constructed here. Designed by the renowned Ganapati Sthapati of Mahabalipuram, this project is estimated to cost around 1.5 crore rupees.

In the central Darbar Hall, an enthroned statue of Shivaji presented by the Government of Maharashtra radiates noble valor. We also visited a vocational training school established for Chenchu drop-out children. It brought immense joy to hear the young Chenchu boys—drawn from hamlets (gudems) across Kurnool district like Bairluti, Nagaluti, Indireshwaram, and Kottalacheruvu—reciting Sanskrit verses: “Akhanda mandalakaram, vyaptam yena characharam…”

Right next to it, we visited the Sridevi Veda Vidyalayam. It is run by Sri Prasada Rao, who took voluntary retirement as a senior executive in a public sector enterprise. There, fifteen students were studying the Taittiriya Samhita. Seeing those young students from Guntur and Krishna districts tending the sacred sacrificial fire (Agnikaryam) daily and immersed in Vedic studies filled our hearts with wonder.

Yet Prasada Rao’s dreams do not end here. He nurtures an ardent wish to introduce computer education from the primary level in tribal residential schools  and to cultivate medicinal plants in the Chenchu settlement of Tummalabayalu.

We then walked through the streets of Srisailam once again. As the ancient poet praised—“However long the unending queues of arriving devotees, so wide and accommodating stretches this sacred town”—we moved forward, taking in the shops along the streets where generations of Shiva devotees had trodden. The bustling streets captivated Suchi so much that she stopped before a shop and began interviewing the shopkeeper. When she asked the owner of the largest shop in the bazaar what item sold the most, he replied simply: clay oil lamps (pramidalu).

After visiting the shrine of the guardian deity, Bayalu Veerabhadraswamy, we went to the nearby Chenchu hamlet of Mekalabanda. Every single home there looked like a temple prepared for Shivaratri. Even today, the Chenchus remain just as the poet praised them seven centuries ago as “the noble and true devotees of Shiva.”

There we met the hamlet elder, Tokala Naganna. His ancestors were hunters; today, he has become a farmer. Yet his arms still carry the strength of a bowman. Stepping forward, he drew his bow and fitted an arrow to show us. Nearby, several young boys were receiving training in making bronze idols. Learning that the artisan training them was a disciple of the renowned master artist Ravindra Kumar Sharma from Adilabad, I felt that the bond of artistic kinship knows no boundaries.

The time had come to leave Srisailam and journey onward. In the presence of Srisailam—which appears To the unawakened, a mere mound of rocks; to the blessed, an expanse of living Lingams—it felt as though my young niece had touched a wondrous, ineffable grace beyond words. Ideally, I should have shown her Pathalaganga as well. She ought to have bathed in those waters—whose surging waves unfurl like creeping vines, carrying the promise of dwelling with the Lord, drawing near Him, and reflecting His divine form—and entered the sanctum steeped in contemplation of Shiva along the ancient stone steps built by the Reddy kings. But for a first encounter, this was enough; the quiet fulfillment of these brief moments will draw her back here throughout her lifetime.

Bio-Diversity

Between nine and ten in the morning, the fragrance of new life drifted through the sprouting forest. Having registered our names in the ledger of Sakshi Ganapati, we visited Hatakeshwaram and the fresh streams of Paladhara and Panchadhara. Hatakeshwaram is a primordial retreat of penance. Once you step onto this ground, there is hardly a soul in whom a sense of quiet detachment does not stir, if only for a fleeting moment.

I shared an episode from the life of the Paramacharya of Kanchi with Suchi. During his visit to Srisailam, the moment the Paramacharya saw Hatakeshwaram, he recognized it as the sacred spot where Adi Shankara had performed penance. Early the next morning, leaving his lodgings and his disciples behind, he walked away to this spot and insisted on remaining there. The earth at Hatakeshwaram seems to hold a magnetic pull that dissolves the inner knots of the self.

We returned to Sundipenta. After breakfast, we headed to the Project Tiger office to learn about the Rajiv Gandhi Nagarjunasagar–Srisailam Tiger Reserve. There, in the Environment Centre amidst beautiful photographs of the landscape, we met Sri Thulasee Rao, the Project Officer for Biodiversity.

Having spent a major part of his career in zoological parks and wildlife management, he had travelled through forests across Southeast Asia and Australia. Welcoming our curiosity, he sat down for an informal conversation with us. Our discussion unfolded outside on the lawn, under the shade of trees. In front of us, deer and antelopes grazed peacefully on the grass. Along the roadside, the Gliricidia was in full bloom, carpeting the ground with pale purple petals.

Speaking like someone sharing a subject close to his heart, Thulasee Rao began, his cheeks flushing with enthusiasm: “This is not merely a tiger reserve. The royal Bengal tiger is at the apex of this living web. For it to survive, countless species beneath it must thrive. It is a vast web of biodiversity—encompassing not just moving creatures like termites, earthworms, snails, snakes, birds, deer, wild sheep, antelopes, and leopards, but also plant communities of grasses, shrubs, vines, timber and non-timber species, and the human communities that depend directly and indirectly upon this forest.”

“We care deeply about every species that is declining or facing extinction,” he continued. “Among all these animate and inanimate beings, a silent, mutual understanding persists for survival. When herds of deer gather under amla trees, langurs shake the branches to drop fruit for them. In return, the watchful deer alert and shield them from ambushing leopards.”

“Our responsibility is to ensure that this continuous cycle of life—from the open grasslands to the seeds that must fall and sprout again—unfolds in harmony with nature,” he added.

At that moment, the poet’s words about Sriparvata came to our minds: “To the unawakened, a mere mound of rocks; to the blessed, an expanse of living Lingams.”

From there, we went to the office of the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), which works for the welfare of the Chenchus. The office manager, Sri Rosi Reddy, welcomed us warmly and explained the agency’s initiatives. Smt. Madhavilatha, working there as the Community Development Coordinator, patiently answered Suchi’s questions about the Chenchu tribe.

“The Chenchus are an ancient, indigenous tribe belonging to a primitive economic stage,” she said. “For the past decade, the agency has implemented various programs to help settle these pre-agricultural, food-gathering communities into farming. Above all, we are making continuous efforts to strengthen their social institutions and improve the delivery of services by empowering Chenchu women in areas like education and healthcare.”

Before heading to the hydro-electric project, we visited the ashram of Swami Poornananda. Born in Madurai in 1939, Swami Poornananda became known to the residents of Srisailam in his thirtieth year while performing penance at Hatakeshwaram. His spiritual quest, which began in the Western Ghats, found its culmination in Srisailam via Shirdi.

Today, in a four-acre setting at Sundipenta, his disciples have established an ashram dedicated to the sacred sandals (Guru Padukas) of the master. A tranquil meditation hall, a beautiful flower garden, a goshala (cow shelter), daily food offering (Nityannadanam), morning and evening fire rituals (yagas), and the chanting of the Chandi Saptashati are the hallmarks of this sanctuary. Sri B.R.K., affectionately addressed as “Peddananna” by the residents, noted that the ashram is run entirely without collecting public donations.

We were treated to hospitality at the ashram that afternoon. “Are there any biographies or books written about the Swami?” Suchi asked.

B.R.K. smiled warmly in reply. “Hardly anyone reads the books that have already been written. Why would we need new ones, Swamiji used to say. If one truly has the longing to learn, the library holds the teachings of Ramana Maharshi and Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Reading those is more than enough.”
