The Criterion Theatre
Watching The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) at the Criterion Theatre in London was an irreverent barrage directed against British literary vanity, traditional aesthetics, and the pedantry of academic Shakespeareans alike. The performers posted an upfront warning that the production was unsuited for those with heart ailments, lower-back pain, degrees in English literature, or impaired inner ears! Condensing all thirty-seven plays into a breathless ninety-seven-minute sprint, the performance leaves the spectator dizzy.
Do not imagine this “condensation” presents the plays in their entirety or stitches together their celebrated dramatic climaxes! Far from it. All sixteen comedies are dispatched in a single three-minute scene. Their premise: the plot underlying all sixteen comedies is fundamentally identical, which Shakespeare merely refurbished under altered titles; hence, the lot can be disposed of in a single comic turn!
Troilus and Cressida appears as a kitchen routine of slicing vegetables; Romeo and Juliet unfolds as a rapid-fire rock routine; and the seven history plays are tackled as an uproarious football match.
Yet the entire production is one thing, and the staging of Hamlet quite another. Commencing from the intermission, nearly forty minutes are devoted to Hamlet alone. The central motif: that among all of Shakespeare’s dramatic works, there is no greater farce than Hamlet. Ragged, disjointed scenes; characters whose true natures remain opaque; an erratic dramatic momentum that refuses to cohere; and, against this backdrop, the obsessive “Hamlet malady” that has held literature and philosophy in an unyielding grip for five centuries—viewed from this perspective, it is hardly surprising that Hamlet reveals itself as an absurd comedy.
The directors pushed this absurdity and comic irreverence to their absolute limits. Running scenes in slow motion, in hyper-fast forward, sideways, backward, and hauling audience members onto the stage to embroil them in the madness, they prolonged the chaotic farce to the furthest degree possible.
From opening lines to curtain call, the production felt like a joke British society had devised at its own expense—a joke at which it laughed with abandon. It was an assault mounted by a new generation against the consecrated British taste that had, for centuries, built up Shakespeare into a brooding, unfathomable, cosmic monolith. It was a broad parody aimed at the knotted, pedantic, and inflated industry of academic Shakespearean scholarship—a barbed arrow shot by American pop youth culture directly at the sanctities of the Old World.
Yet what remains remarkable is that the scriptwriters—Reed Martin, Austin Tichenor, and Jess Winfield (alongside Daniel Singer)—are in no way inferior to the older generation of scholars in their command of Shakespeare. A theatre critic reviewing the production observed:
“The players have studied their Shakespeare with such fierce precision that the Bard’s lines, uttered so often in the most ridiculous contexts, struck me with such direct force that I found myself compelled to think about Shakespeare all over again.”
Introducing their creative and technical personnel in the program, they included an entry for William Shakespeare himself:
“William Shakespeare: Deceased playwright. Believed to have written some or all of the 36 plays published in the First Folio. Though generally regarded as enthusiastic, there is no evidence to suggest he was particularly fond of parties or showed any aptitude for Chinese checkers. The Reduced Shakespeare Company is convinced that were Shakespeare alive today, he would not only have wholeheartedly endorsed this interpretation of his works, but would have enlisted in the company the moment the curtain fell.”
The Criterion is a quintessential nineteenth-century playhouse. Erected in 1870 as a grand restaurant complex, its subterranean chamber was converted into a theatre in 1874. Until nearly 1899, the actor Charles Wyndham managed the theatre personally, staging drawing-room comedies.
The playhouse maintained its performances even through wartime; during the Blitz of the Second World War, its subterranean auditorium served as a bomb-proof broadcasting studio for the BBC. Following the war, the Criterion renewed its renown by championing avant-garde drama, including the English-language premiere of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot (1955). Though refurbished extensively after 1992, the Criterion continues to enchant actors and audiences alike as an intimate Victorian jewel box in the heart of London.
What captivated me most about the theatre was its intimate architectural scale. Throughout the performance, the warm proximity linking the proscenium to the auditorium dissolves the divide between actor and spectator, transforming them into companions. The spectator surrenders to the affectionate illusion that a handful of close friends have stepped onto the boards from among their own circle to stage a romp for their private delight. In that illusion of warm intimacy resides the true triumph of theatre—the enduring, enchanting secret that live stagecraft commands over cinema.

A City of Museums
Manchester may well be called a city of museums. It boasts several remarkable institutions, such as the National Museum of Labour History, the Museum of Transport, and the Lancashire Mining Museum; yet alongside the Manchester Museum, we were able to visit only the Museum of Science and Industry. Spread across five historic blocks at Deansgate in the ancient Roman quarter of Castlefield, this award-winning institution holds singular importance, rooted as it is in the world’s very first industrial metropolis.
The first block of the museum is devoted to aeronautics and space flight. Alongside life-sized vintage aircraft, it offers comprehensive documentation detailing the historic evolution of Manchester Airport.
The second block houses the Power Hall, displaying working steam-mill engines, early locomotives, and heavy transport machinery. Through operable working models, the exhibits trace the profound transformations unleashed across the industrial landscape by James Watt’s steam engine and its subsequent mechanical evolution. With massive black iron engines, towering smokestacks, interlocking gears, heavy leather driving belts, and the hiss of steam, this mechanical arena—which systematically subdued human and animal muscle to the power of the machine—struck me as an epic gallery of kinetic sculpture.
The third and fourth blocks preserve, in their original condition, the 1830 passenger railway station and the world’s first railway warehouse.
In the subterranean vaults of the third block are three specialized exhibitions. The first is the National Gas Gallery, which traces the evolution of gas lighting and domestic utilities through working models.
The second, titled Underground Manchester, mounts a detailed examination of civic sanitation, subterranean drainage networks, and municipal waterworks, illustrating the severe sanitary crises and slum squalor generated by runaway industrialization, alongside the engineering responses devised by the Manchester Corporation over decades.
The third is The Making of Manchester, an archival documentation detailing the rise and evolution of the city. Alongside maps, posters, archival photographs, cartoons, and authentic artifacts, the gallery incorporates life-sized working models and an evocative ten-minute sound-and-light installation. Drawing upon literature, state archives, and historical travel diaries, it provides an invaluable repository of civic memory. My own grasp of Manchester owes an immense debt to that exhibition. Every major city in our own country ought to possess an equivalent museum documenting its historical evolution.
The fifth block houses the main admission concourse, a library, an archival records center, and an information hub, alongside the historic Lower Byrom Street warehouse.
Complementing these was a special visiting exhibition titled China: Cradle of Knowledge, tracing seven millennia of scientific, technological, and medical innovations across Chinese history. Featuring authentic artifacts brought directly from China alongside faithful replicas, the exhibition mounted displays covering ancient Chinese breakthroughs in medicine, navigation, astronomy, architecture, bronzework, gunpowder, sericulture, porcelain, agriculture, mechanical contrivances, calligraphy, and moveable-type printing. In the fine arts section, classical Chinese poetic scrolls and brush-and-ink watercolors were also available for acquisition.

What an unusual and interesting play you have watched, Sir!!
I am sure it takes an equally good command of Shakespeare to appreciate such an intelligent and irreverent take on his works. 🙏🏽
