Awakenings
If dreaming about education is one dimension of this journey, waking abruptly from those reveries—as if shaken by a sudden hand on the shoulder—is the other. Those moments of awakening are the blunt messages delivered by the real world. They serve as sharp warnings, whispering loudly and without hesitation into our ears that reality does not conform to our wishes, and that nothing guarantees circumstances will bend to our ideals.
I am as deeply indebted to those awakenings as I am to my dreams.
Without those grounding realizations, the visions I nurtured would have dissolved like fleeting rumors into thin air. Awakenings are essential if our ideals are to leave an enduring imprint on the world and meaningfully influence the lives of others.
Yet I could never accept the harsh conditions revealed by these awakenings as immutable truths, nor could I believe that we are condemned to endure their bitterness indefinitely. Nor was I the first to experience such jolts of reality; countless educators, visionaries, and writers before me walked this exact path of disillusionment and rediscovery.
Many great educational thinkers, exasperated by the resistance they encountered in practice, were driven to launch fierce critiques against the schooling systems of their day. Behind their severity lay not merely personal anguish, but the very seeds of alternative educational paradigms.
To me, an awakening is not merely the passive recognition of the limits of one’s dreams. True awakening begins when one transcends the exhaustion, bitterness, and despair born of those limitations to search actively for a more enlightened horizon.
Viewed from this perspective, every transformative educator began by challenging the established schooling of their time. They confronted the officially sanctioned dogmas and popular educational orthodoxies of their eras. We can state with certainty that no thinker who failed to interrogate and microscopically examine their contemporary educational structure ever left a lasting legacy for succeeding generations.
Dreams alone cannot sustain an educator’s vision. We must also examine the specific awakenings they underwent in their quest to translate ideals into practice. Every awakening exposes the boundary of our current imagination. In doing so, it equips us to dream more lucidly and act more pragmatically.
Awakening does not merely lend wings to our imagination; it provides hands and feet to build upon solid earth. Grounded by insight, we can reconstruct our world with greater fidelity and approach our surroundings with authentic conviction.
The primary awakening is this: to the exact extent that schools possess the power to awaken new life, cultivate new perceptions, and provide transformative knowledge, they can equally impede human progress, suppress original thought, and reinforce the hegemony of dominant power structures.
The first time this realization dawned upon me, I was stunned. Human society tends naturally toward inertia and conformism (gatanugathikam). Few readily abandon settled habits, and fewer still surrender the effortless comfort of inherited orthodoxies. Only a dedicated vanguard of visionaries, enlightened educators, and compassionate schools can shoulder the responsibility of rousing society from such deep slumber.
It is deeply tragic to realize that schools themselves often obstruct human progress and drill rigid conformity into children’s minds. Yet this remains an undeniable truth. In one dimension, schools operate as bastions of the status quo. While unlettered people outside formal schooling might occasionally find paths to intellectual emancipation, achieving genuine human freedom within classroom walls proves far more difficult. That is why genuine humanists—those who challenged every institutional servitude and psychological bondage—consistently directed their sharpest critiques against formal schools.
Repression is embedded within the very architecture of institutionalized schooling. It stems from bureaucratizing the acquisition of knowledge—mechanizing within four static walls a communion that ought to unfold freely, purely, and unhindered between two human beings. No blood is spilled in that silent execution, yet it extinguishes the human spirit.
When we recall Mahatma Gandhi’s affirmation that education must train the human soul, the realization that schools not only fail to awaken that soul but actively suffocate it becomes an unimaginable tragedy. Thinkers like Gandhi, Rousseau, Pestalozzi, and Chalam were not merely indulging in romantic idealism or abstract naturalism; their critiques were forged in the crucible of grounded, practical reality. Their words carried the weight of personal observation, hard-won awakenings, and profound anguish.
Recalling his own childhood, Rabindranath Tagore expressed this exact indictment in “My School”:
“I remember the evening when a child came to me with the news that she was to be sent to school the next day. I felt sympathy for the child and said to myself, ‘Poor thing, your holiday in the wonderful world of the unfamiliar is over; your prison life is to begin.’
When I was about five years old, I was forcefully sent to school. What I could not learn through the natural process of living had to be forced down my throat in that schoolroom. It was an educational institution—a factory specially designed for grinding out uniform results. I fled from that institution, rebelled against it, and became a runaway.
Children are not born adults; they are raw, restless, and spontaneous. The child’s life is a life of play and boundless curiosity. Nature has provided them with this restless movement so that they may constantly knock at the door of the world and make acquaintance with things in their own living way. But our educational system refuses to accept children as children; it seeks to punish them for their vitality and turn them into miniature grown-ups.
While Mother Nature pulls on one side, beckoning them to the open sky and green fields, the schoolmaster pulls from the other, confining them to four lifeless walls. Every child is thus turned into a tragic battleground between living nature and a mechanical system.”
The realization that schools and teachers routinely lose this struggle between organic human curiosity and rigid institutional systems was my first tragic awakening. My second awakening was the realization that neither schools nor teachers were making any serious effort to break out of that defeat.
Much literature has been written by past thinkers on this predicament. Scholars debate endlessly whether teachers are constrained because schools are institutional prisons, or whether schools turn rigid because teachers themselves are intellectually shackled.
Yet the truly heartbreaking awakening remains this: most teachers lack the autonomy, creative vitality, and pedagogical freedom to awaken their students to new horizons.
In the twentieth century, the condition of the teacher deteriorated even further. First came the quantitative explosion: as schools proliferated on an unprecedented scale, vast numbers of instructors entered the profession, expanding institutional demands exponentially. Yet no educational system made meaningful progress in cultivating their deeper pedagogical ideals, refining their training, or supporting their reflective practice.
Before we could resolve the core questions surrounding the teacher as a living link between the child and knowledge, the twentieth century drew to a close. The sudden rise of Information and Communication Technologies began calling the very necessity of the human teacher into question. We have scarcely begun to comprehend the structural shifts brought on by the internet replacing the blackboard, nor have we initiated a serious, collective dialogue to navigate the profound pedagogical questions this transition raises.
The third major awakening concerns the philosophical and psychological foundations upon which our educational systems are constructed—the epistemological roots of modern schooling.
Because contemporary educational thought is heavily shaped by European philosophy, it carries a deep-seated, intellectual centralism. Plato, the foundational thinker of Western philosophy, posited that truth has a universal, objective existence accessible primarily through abstract reason, asserting that we must seek the transcendent ideal form rather than the sensory material world. This premise became deeply entrenched as philosophical idealism, casting an enduring shadow over how modern schooling defines knowledge and invalidates localized, experiential ways of knowing.
Shaped heavily by Pythagorean thought, Plato established mathematics as the supreme symbol of humanity’s quest for knowledge. Plato’s disciple, Aristotle, questioned this premise, arguing that sensory perception forms the true foundation of human understanding. Through this departure, Aristotle introduced empirical, scientific methods in place of Plato’s pure idealism.
For nearly two and a half millennia, the history of Western philosophy unfolded as an ongoing debate between Platonic idealism and Aristotelian empiricism. Naturally, global educational systems were shaped by this enduring dialogue.
While some traditions sought to cultivate the student through idealistic methods, others pursued learning through empirical science. Alongside these two philosophical currents, religious institutions sought to anchor education in moral character building (seela vidya) and ethical discipline.
Until the mid-twentieth century, these pedagogical approaches coexisted in various configurations. Educational thinkers blended these frameworks to suit their particular values and institutional goals. One school of thought held that the child is innately pure, and that neither school nor teacher should disrupt this purity, but rather help the child awaken to self-awareness.
Conversely, another current argued that the truth a student must discover lies “beyond” oneself—requiring disciplined sensory training and systematic instruction to perceive objective reality.
Yet despite their profound differences, both approaches shared a common aspiration: to provide a comprehensive education that would mold the student into a complete, balanced human being.
This philosophical consensus endured until the dawn of the post-colonial and post-modern era in the latter half of the twentieth century, when the paradigm shifted drastically.
Until then, European epistemic assumptions had operated as the sole universal standard of global truth. Any debate centered merely on whether truth was best grasped through abstract reason or empirical observation; few questioned the universality of the standard itself.
However, in the second half of the twentieth century, nations across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Pacific achieved political independence. With decolonization, indigenous traditions, local epistemologies, and cultural realities gained rightful recognition. A world once mistakenly assumed to be monolithic fractured into a pluralistic mosaic.
The immediate impact fell heavily on educational ideals. The schooling models established in newly independent nations had largely been imported instruments of European educational philosophy. As Europe itself began to question its own universalist claims, post-colonial societies entered an acute educational crisis. This crisis manifested in three distinct directions:
The first was a reactionary impulse: the total rejection of European schooling in favor of a purely indigenous educational framework. Yet because traditional knowledge systems had undergone centuries of colonial disruption and hybridization (sankaryam), recovering a pristine, unadulterated indigenous model was impossible. Consequently, this approach often resulted in the artificial construction of an idealized past—a fundamentalist orthodoxy.
The second approach did not reject European educational frameworks entirely. Instead, it sought to synthesize Western educational ideals with the living, egalitarian elements of indigenous thought, striving for a broad democratic consensus. Wherever constitutional democracies took root, this synthesis became the foundation of official national curricula.
The inherent limitation of this approach, however, was that in its eagerness to accommodate every competing interest, education frequently became a compromised patchwork of disparate beliefs, introducing deep ambiguity into fundamental pedagogical goals.
The third perspective abandoned the concept of permanent, universal knowledge altogether, redefining education not as an earnest quest for truth, but as functional skill generation. Under this paradigm, shaping students into compassionate human beings ceased to be the central objective. The focus narrowed entirely to manufacturing technical experts. By accelerating the learning process and maximizing economic utility, this model seeks to produce technical specialists in sync with rapidly shifting market demands.
Over time, this commodified system obsesses over how cheaply it can train specialists and how rapidly it can upgrade their technical proficiencies to serve economic productivity, giving no thought to whether these individuals are developing into empathetic, humane beings.
The irony is that this third, technocratic perspective commands the greatest global dominance today. Across affluent, middle-class, and working-class families alike, parents, communities, and nations are consumed by a single anxiety: how quickly they can convert their children into marketable experts.
History offers ample evidence for this shift. We cannot overlook the fact that behind North America and Europe transforming from agrarian societies into prosperous industrial powerhouses over the past three to four centuries, schools in those nations functioned relentlessly as factories manufacturing technical specialists.
If someone objects that the specialists turned out by those very factories designed weapons of mass destruction and precipitated two catastrophic World Wars, the apologists have a ready answer. They immediately cite post-war Germany and Japan, arguing that those nations rose swiftly from total devastation precisely because of the technical prowess of their skilled workforces.
Ultimately, the prevailing dogma proclaims this: education is not an instrument to awaken the soul, because the soul does not exist. Nor is education a vessel for character building, because the market demands functional experts, not moral philosophers. Or, to put it plainly, education need not cultivate any ethical sensibility beyond the demands of market utility.
Under this worldview, the belief that education should nurture the whole, integrated human being is dismissed as a totalitarian relic. The sole purpose of schooling is reduced to producing the workforce required for the current cycle of goods and services.
Against this backdrop, by the close of the twentieth century, the historical dichotomy in educational ideals resurfaced in a modern guise.
In earlier epochs, learning reached society through two distinct streams. The first was an elite education reserved for the wealthy and privileged classes. Thinkers argued that this track should be comprehensive—grounded in the highest expressions of literature, aesthetic reasoning, philosophical inquiry, classical arts, sculpture, and music.
Meanwhile, the vast majority of working people had no access to formal education. Where learning existed for them, it was strictly minimal and largely confined to hereditary vocations. The Industrial Revolution in Europe was not built by the cultured aristocracy; it was powered by the labor of unlettered artisans and mechanics.
In the twentieth century, the consequences of this dualism took an unexpected turn. When North America championed universal schooling under the banner of democratization, the world embraced “Education for All” as an unquestioned, noble ideal. Yet how did that ideal materialize on the ground?
Paradoxically, the modern world abandoned the humanist educational ideals of the past. The humanities, arts, and literature that had fueled the Renaissance were steadily pushed to the margins of the school curriculum. Only the narrow technical competencies that served industrial mass production were retained as the core of modern schooling.
Today, “Education for All” effectively means ensuring that these mechanical proficiencies reach everyone. Yet these are not creative faculties; they are merely instrumental routines.
Even so, this was not my most painful awakening. The deeper tragedy is that our contemporary world cannot even equitably universalize the narrow technical training it promotes as education.
Nominally, we speak of universal education, yet schooling remains fractured into a two-tiered hierarchy of elite education and mass education. Elite education provides mastery over high-end technological competencies; mass education offers only low-level, rudimentary instruction. The realization that under the banner of democratization we have come to venerate mechanical training rather than authentic education—and that we fail to distribute even these instrumental skills equitably—recalls Sindbad’s unsettling voyage.
On his first voyage, Sindbad’s vessel anchors alongside what appears to be a tranquil island. The crew disembarks, lighting fires and preparing for rest, only to realize that the land beneath their feet is the submerged back of a colossal whale. My awakening regarding modern universal schooling is much the same. It is not solid earth beneath our feet. It is a precarious, beast-like refuge. The moment the creature stirs, the fragile illusion collapses, plunging everyone into turmoil.
The injustice runs far deeper than mere skill disparity. The most unbearable tragedy is that the rudimentary instruction offered to the vast majority under the name of universal education bears no relevance to their daily lives or the welfare of their communities.
Meanwhile, the high-end technical skills reserved for a privileged few—whether operating complex machinery, mastering surgical technology, or coding software—serve solely to accelerate production, maximize output, and generate corporate profits. They offer no wisdom on how to live harmoniously with one’s fellow human beings, nor do they teach the soul how to pause and savor the serene beauty of the evening twilight.
In truth, this awakening is not new. Every thinker who cherished human freedom and authentic enlightenment has consistently rebelled against the mechanical reduction of education.
The International Commission on the Development of Education, established by UNESCO under the chairmanship of Edgar Faure, articulated this warning in its landmark 1972 report, Learning to Be: The World of Education Today and Tomorrow:
“The tremendous changes which are taking place in our time are creating a new situation for humanity. They are modifying the conditions of life on earth and threatening the unity of the human race and its future, and even the very concept of man.
What is to be feared is not only the painful effects of growing inequalities, but a profound split within the human species: humanity divided into the powerful and the weak, the masters and the slaves, the super-men and the sub-men. The masses who are left behind might well become outcasts, rebels, and destructive forces.
The danger would not be merely one of conflict and destruction, but of a generalized dehumanization affecting rich and poor alike. For once human nature itself is endangered, no one can remain immune to the consequences.”
The report continued:
“It may be objected that this is a dramatic exaggeration, that differences in educational opportunity are not new, and that history has always known such divisions.
We believe this objection to be profoundly mistaken. The situation we are facing today is entirely unprecedented. Never before in the history of the world has a situation arisen comparable to that which we see developing today. It is not merely a quantitative acceleration, but a qualitative leap into an entirely new dimension of danger…”
These words were written over five decades ago. Since then, the global landscape has shifted beyond anything the commission could have anticipated. When Edgar Faure submitted his report, the revolutions in Information and Communication Technology, Artificial Intelligence, and Biotechnology had scarcely been imagined.
In our hyper-globalized world, even those prophetic warnings seem understated when confronting the scale of contemporary educational alienation. To synthesize the core crisis concisely:
- Incomplete Education: Contemporary schooling has ceased to be an education of the whole human being.
- Commodification of Skills: Learning is reduced to market-driven utility—generating, upgrading, and extracting narrow proficiencies solely to accelerate the production of goods and services and maximize corporate profit.
- Loss of Spiritual Core: This technocratic focus bears no connection to the true aims of education: spiritual awakening, moral character building, and the art of living in mutual harmony.
- Cosmetic Preservations: Where moral or humanistic values appear to survive in curricula, they remain either accidental or mere residual tokens of traditional institutions that have not yet fully disintegrated.
- Structural Division: Even if skill creation is accepted as the primary mandate of modern schooling, its universalist rhetoric masks an internal stratification that fractures society into rigid hierarchies of privilege.
- Deepening Polarization: This structure produces an elite minority endowed with lucrative, cutting-edge proficiencies on one side, and an alienated majority on the other—relegated to low-grade, mechanical instruction that offers little value to their lives, their communities, or their social well-being.
- Hyper-Competition: By framing learning as individual competitive acquisition rather than collective cultural life, schools cultivate anxiety, alienation, and ruthless rivalry instead of empathy and solidarity.
- Social Disconnection: Consumed by hyper-specialization, neither the highly trained expert nor the marginalized school leaver learns how to live in peace with family, neighbors, or fellow human beings.
- A Dehumanized World: Consequently, the modern world risks becoming a theater of conflict rather than a shared sanctuary—an arena where fractured groups struggle against one another, undermining the ecological and social foundations of our collective existence.

All of this helped me look at education from a broader perspective.
Your experiences may be from local ground realities, Sir, but the perspective you bring to education is truly global.
