ఒకప్పుడు పందొమ్మిదో శతాబ్దిలో పారిసులో స్టీఫెను మల్లార్మే ఇంట్లో ప్రతి మంగళవారం కవులు కలుసుకునేవారట. అలాగ ఇప్పుడు ప్రతి శుక్రవారం సాయంకాలం ఈ వేదిక వల్ల ఎక్కడెక్కడి కవుల్నీ, రచయితల్నీ, సాహిత్యారాధకుల్నీ కలుసుకోగలుగుతున్నాను. వారితో గొప్ప పుస్తకాల గురించి మాట్లాడుకోగలుగుతున్నాను. వారికీ, ఈ సాంకేతిక విప్లవానికీ నా నమస్సులు.

Every week, as soon as I finish listening to the talks, there is a feeling of elation and joy.
In today’s talk, the parallels you drew between Whitman’s poetry and our Vedic slokams were very enlightening sir. You explained “పూర్ణమదః పూర్ణమిదం” and showed how Whitman had lived this truth. Whitman used the word “gander” and the word “గోచరం” (గోవు చరించినంత మేర) as a pasture where our senses must graze and refine themselves. That image made his idea so clear.
మీ అక్కగారు చెప్పిన శ్రీనాథకవి , హరవిలాసం కథలో కప్పలు చేసే కరవట్ కరవట్ అనే శబ్దం and how only those whose senses are fully tuned to the world can capture its essence into poetry!! This was such a beautiful insight, sir.
You drew a parallel to Whitman’s inclusion of all beings, even the insignificant ones like “the cat on the house-sill, the chickadee, the prairie-dog.”
Your mention that Christopher Meryll reminds us that Thoreau said about Whitman’s 16th sarga: “Music is continuous, only our listening is intermittent.” What a striking thought!
When you read the whole 17th sarga and Dasaradhi Rangacharya’s రుద్రాధ్యాయ అనువాదం, I simply closed my eyes just listening and visualizing and trying to feel that విస్తృతం, వైశాల్యం that these poets and Rushis saw..

When you explained that Rushis arrived at “నమః శివాయచ, నమః శివతరాయచ” and said that this was the moment of శివుని ఆవిర్భావం and లింగోద్భవ ఘట్టం!! These were goosebump moments, sir.
The connections you drew to రుద్రం in Yajurveda, Heinrich Zimmer’s view of Taittiriya Upanishad as a universal communist manifesto, and the idea of offering namaskaram to every form of life – these are extraordinary ideas, sir.
Thank you for giving us a glimpse into the magnitude of these Vedic hymns. I hope you will do sessions on namakam, chamakam and other Vedic verses someday.
Your explanation of Whitman’s cataloguing continued so powerfully this week, sir.
Whitman’s vast lists in Sarga 17 are not simple cataloguing but they are a Virat Swaroopa darshanam, just like our Vedic hymn “సహస్రశీర్షా పురుషః…” celebrates Virat swaroopam darsanam.
You showed how an American poet who didn’t know these Vedas, still carried that same universal spirit of the rushis and hence you called Whitman their true వారసుడు. Felt so true!!
Your reflections on Mahatma Gandhi were deeply inspiring,sir!
“నేను ప్రపంచ పవనాలన్నీ నా ఇంట్లోకి ధారాళంగా ప్రవహించడానికి వీలుగా నా కిటికీలు, తలుపులు తెరిచి వుంచుతాను, అయితే ఏ ఒక్క గాలీ కూడా నన్ను ఎగరవేయకుండా చూసుకుంటాను.”
You explained how Whitman too lived this truth, seeing himself as both a northerner and a southerner – a universal man in a divided America. మానవత్వం వికసించిన కవి మాత్రమే చెప్పగల మాటలు అన్నారు. So true!!
Your explanation of why Whitman chose grass as a symbol (because it is universal, pervasive, growing wherever water is available, connecting trilokas and everyday life ) helped appreciate Whitman’s imagery and his thoughtful symbolism.
You said Christopher Meryll says the 19th sarga is “one of the most sweeping statements of equality”
Whitman reveals his agenda:
“చైత్ర మాస వసంత వానకి ఎంత నిగూఢ ఉద్దేశం వుందో
ఘనుల్లో రాళ్ల మధ్య పేరుకున్న అభ్రక పొరలకి ఎంత ప్రయోజనం వుందో “
Again మానవత్వం వికసించిన కవి మాటలివి!!
Week after week, it feels like you are not just discussing Whitman or just poetry, sir. Feel that elevation you spoke about, when you bring together these universal truths lived and expressed by great people across cultures and time.
