Just finished listening to this week’s talk, Sir!
So many layers in this kavyam!! So grateful that you are helping me understand and appreciate it at every step.
It was fascinating to know that Kalidasa was inspired by Lanka puri varnana in Valmiki’s Sundara kanda, and created Alakapuri through a new lens.
Lanka being a grabbed land but Alaka puri a free land and how Kalidasa showed the different shades of a paradise.
The glimpses of Alakapuri – Kalidasa’s paradise where there is no dukkham , with నిత్య జ్యోత్స్న, hamsalu విహరించే తామరలు పూసిన కొలనులు, మణులు పొదిగిన కట్టడాలు, నిత్యం పూసే పువ్వులు , మందారాల తోటలు , కల్పవృక్షం , సంగీత వాయిద్యాలు, and “వెన్నెల్లో ఆడుకునే అందమైన ఆడపిల్లలు.” (దేవకన్యలు)
He created an enchanting and aspirational world.
Your highlighting of the thought —
“Kavitvam enduku chadavaali: padaala meeda perukupoyina dummuni tholaginchukovadaniki, goppa kavi aa dhummuni dulipi malli manaka padaanni isthadu” was much needed. Your explanation of రతి in this context helped understand the importance of reading poetry and knowing the real meaning of words and how the meanings change over time.
Appreciated your thoughts on Kalpavruksham, and how Sri Ramakrishna viewed life on earth itself as living under a kalpavruksham. It reminded me of how the Vedanta centers (Ramakrishna Mission) celebrate Kalpa Taru Day every January 1st.
I also loved your references to poets from all over the world like Emily Dickinson, Milton, Issa, and our own modern poets, all imagining paradise as a garden of flowers. Very heart-warming connections!
