ఒక మాట

(నీటిలో ఒదిగి ఉన్న నిప్పులాగా, సస్యములో ఒదిగి ఉన్న రుచి లాగా,  మొగ్గలో ఒదిగి ఉన్న పరిమళం లాగా, కూడల సంగమదేవుని ఉనికి కన్యలో ఒదిగి ఉన్న స్నేహము వంటిది)

1980-81 మధ్యకాలంలో నేను కథలు రాయడం మొదలుపెట్టాను. అప్పట్లో ఆర్.ఎస్.సుదర్శనంగారి సాహిత్యవ్యాసాలు నన్ను గాఢంగా ప్రభావితుణ్ణి చేసాయి. కావ్యాల్లాగా ఉండే నవలలు తెలుగులో రావాలని ఆయన కోరుకున్నారు. ఆ స్ఫూర్తితో ‘అసంపూర్ణ మథనం’ అనే ఒక నవల 1981 లో రాసాను. దాన్ని ఆయనకి చూపించినప్పుడు బావుందని చెప్తూ, ‘అసంపూర్ణ’ అనే పదం తీసేసి, ఆ నవలని ప్రచురించవచ్చని చెప్పారు. కాని నాకే ఆ రచన తృప్తిగా అనిపించలేదు. మధిరకు చెందిన చంద్రశేఖర ఆజాద్ అనే మిత్రుడు ఆ రచనని ఇష్టపడితే ఆ రాతప్రతి ఆయనకి ఇచ్చేసాను. ఆ తర్వాత 1982 లో ‘అరణ్యం’ అనే నవల రాసాను. నండూరి రామ్మోహనరావుగారికి అది నచ్చింది. ఆయన దాన్ని ఆంధ్రజ్యోతి దినపత్రికలో సీరియలైజ్ చేసారు. నవోదయ రామ్మోహనరావుగారు దాన్ని నవోదయ తరఫున 1987 లో ప్రచురించారు. కాని ఆ రచన కూడా నాకు తృప్తినివ్వలేదు.

1982-87 మధ్యకాలంలో, టాల్ స్టాయి ‘ఫామిలీ హాపీనెస్’, టాగోర్ ‘నష్టనీడ్’, బిభూతి భూషణ్ ‘ఆరణ్యక’, వైకం మహమ్మద్ బషీర్ ‘బాల్యకాల సఖి’, చింగిజ్ ఐత్ మాతొవ్ ‘జమీల్యా’ వంటి రచనలు చదివాక, కావ్యత్వం పొందిన నవలలు ఎలా ఉంటాయో అర్థమయింది.

ఆ రచనల స్ఫూర్తితో ఈ నవల 1987 లో రాయడం మొదలుపెట్టాను. అప్పటికి నేను జిల్లా గిరిజనసంక్షేమాధికారిగా విజయనగరం జిల్లాలో ట్రైనింగులో చేరాను. ఆ ట్రైనింగులో చాలా ఊళ్ళు తిరుగుతూ ఉండటంతో, ఆ రచన ముందుకు సాగలేదు. రాసిన ముప్ఫై, నలభై పేజీలు కూడా ఎక్కడో పోగొట్టుకున్నాను. తిరిగి మళ్లా 2002 దాకా ఒక నవల రాయగల స్తిమితం నాకు చిక్కలేదు. 2002 లో సి.సుజాత గారి సంపాదకత్వంలో మొదలైన ఒక మాసపత్రికలో ‘ఆ వెన్నెల రాత్రులు’ పేరిట ఇందులోని మొదటి అధ్యాయం ప్రచురణకు నోచుకుంది. కాని ఆ పత్రిక రెండో నెలకే మూతపడటంతో, అప్పుడు రాసిన రెండవ అధ్యాయం కూడా ప్రచురణకు నోచుకోకపోగా, అది కూడా  పోగొట్టుకున్నాను. చివరికి ఇన్నాళ్ళకి, అంటే ఈ రచన మొదలుపెట్టిన 36 ఏళ్ళ తరువాత, ఇలా పూర్తిచేయగలిగాను. నా జీవితంలో సుదీర్ఘకాలం తీసుకున్న రచనగా ఇది మిగిలిపోతుంది.

1987 లోనో, 2002 లోనో ఈ నవల పూర్తయి ఉంటే, ఈ రచన ఎలా ఉండి ఉండేదో ఊహించలేకపోతున్నాను. కాని ఇప్పుడు అరవై ఏళ్ళు దాటాక చేసిన ఈ రచనని చూసుకుంటే, టాగోర్‌, ‘ఫలసేకరణ’ లోని ఈ కవిత నాకు గుర్తొస్తోంది:

వసంత పవనుడు యాచించ వచ్చినప్పుడు, తన సమృద్ధిలోంచి ఒకటి రెండు రేకుల్ని రాల్చి కూడా ఏ మాత్రం తరుగుపోని పువ్వు మల్లే వుండేది నా చిన్నతనపు జీవితం.

ఒక్క రవ్వ ఎటూ పోనీక, తన మధురభారాన్నంతా సంపూర్ణంగా అర్పించుకోవాలనే ఫలం వలె వుంది నా యవ్వనాంత జీవితం.

మా బాల్యకాలమిత్రుడు, మా ఊర్ని ఎంతో ప్రేమించిన శ్రీధర మల్లికార్జున్‌ ఇప్పుడు స్వర్గంలో ఉన్నాడు.  అతను జీవించి ఉండగా అతనికి నేనేమీ చెయ్యలేకపోయాను. ఇప్పుడు ఈ పుస్తకం తనకు కానుకచేస్తున్నానని తెలిస్తే తప్పకుండా మురిసిపోతాడని నమ్ముతున్నాను.
